Who is To Do God's Work?!?

Charlie Rangle made an interesting comment the other day about Democrats.  He claimed that they were doing God’s work.

"And so what we have to do is send a collective voice," he said of the upcoming midterm elections. "Everything we're doing is God's work: education, healthcare, affordable housing, [protecting against] discrimination, paying people the minimum wage."

First off, allow me to state the obvious.  Any party that boos God publicly, promotes and defends the murder of pre-born babies, and defends homosexuality, is not doing God’s work. 

Secondly, government isn't supposed to do God’s work; God’s people are.  Where in the Bible does it teach that God’s work is even close to his list?  When the Bible speaks of education, it speaks to parents.  Healthcare?
The Good Samaritan didn't look to the government to take care of the beaten and robbed man.  He paid for it out of his own pocket.  Paul speaks to discrimination in Colossians 3 where he says that in Christ, “there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and in all.”   Also in James 2, James teaches about not discriminating against the poor in the church.  Affordable housing?!?  Minimum wage?!?  The Bible speaks much about working and that employers are to pay their laborers the wage agreed upon, but nothing about a minimum wage.  

Nowhere in the Bible does it teach that government is supposed to take care of the poor.  The Bible does teach however, that the Church is supposed to help the widows and orphans.   What was the welfare system in the Old Testament?  Let's look at Leviticus 19:9-10;

“‘When you gather in the harvest of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field, and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest.  You must not pick your vineyard bare, and you must not gather up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You must leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.”

It doesn't say that there must be special fields planted for the poor; it doesn't say that the farmers must pick the grain and then harvest it and take it a store where the poor come with their EBT cards to pick it up.  The poor had to actually work and harvest it themselves.  

Let's look also at Paul’s instructions to Timothy about widows.  I rarely ever hear this passage talked about.

“Honor widows who are truly widows.  But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.  She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.  Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach.  But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
“Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband, and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has shown hospitality, has washed the feet of the saints, has cared for the afflicted, and has devoted herself to every good work.  But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith.  Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.  So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.  For some have already strayed after Satan.  If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows.”  I Timothy 5:3-16

It’s interesting that first off, families are supposed to take care of their widows.  Secondly, the widows who were to “put on the list” were to be at least 60 years old, wife of one husband and having a reputation for good works.  In other words, one who could not support herself because of age, one who was married only once and one who was known for her good deeds.  Interesting requirements, don’t you think?   

The Bible does speak a lot about work and laziness however.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”  Genesis 2:15

Man was given work to do by God in the Garden of Eden.  Work isn't a curse.  God created man physically stronger so that he could both provide for his family, but also to protect his family.  The curse came after Adam and Eve disobeyed God and God cursed the ground so that man’s labor would be hard work.  See Genesis 3:17-19.  

Adam wasn't the first to work, however.  From Exodus, we learn that Jesus was the first Person to work.  

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.”  Exodus 2:10-11

We know from John 1 that Jesus was the Word of God who created the world.  We also see from this passage in Exodus the principle that God assumes that we will be working.  This is why He instituted a day of rest.  Our bodies need time to relax and recuperate.  

Proverbs is full of references to those who are lazy.  The term that is used often is sluggard.  According to Webster’s Dictionary, a sluggard is “a habitually lazy person.”  Here are just a few of the references to laziness and sluggards from Proverbs.

“Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.”  Proverbs 19:15

“The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.”  Proverbs 12:24

“Whoever is slothful will not roast his game, but the diligent man will get precious wealth.”  Proverbs 12:27

“The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway.” Proverbs 15:19  
“The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor.” Proverbs 21:25
“A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”  Proverbs 10:4

“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.”  Proverbs 13:4

“The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing.”  Proverbs 20:4

The New Testament also teaches about work.  

Paul is very clear in II Thessalonians 3:6, “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”  The context of this verse talks about the example of Paul himself and his own work ethic.  

In Colossians 3:23, Paul instructs in whatever work we do, we are to do it unto the Lord.  

The problem that we have here in America is that we have people who have been deceived into believing that government is supposed to help the poor.  I have a friend who calls them “do gooders.”  If individuals like Charlie Rangle really wanted to help the poor, they would put in place policies that would allow the economy to grow; cut taxes and cut regulations.  Quit stifling businesses.  Which is better, Mr. Rangle?  A job or charity? 

One of my favorite quotes about the economy and helping the poor is from Milton Friedman.



“In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty you’re talking about, the only cases in recorded history, are where they have had capitalism and largely free trade. If you want to know where the masses are worse off, worst off, it’s exactly in the kinds of societies that depart from that. So that the record of history is absolutely crystal clear, that there is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of the ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by the free-enterprise system.”  Milton Friedman

Mr. Rangle, leave God’s work to God’s people.  The Constitution gives you your job description.  As a member of Congress, your job description is found in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.  Note that nowhere in there is anything about healthcare, affordable housing, education or the minimum wage.  That is not your job. 

To quote Jesus, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Lamar In His Own Words on Education

I saw Lamar Alexander's "No National School Board" ad again last night.  Every time I hear/see it, I crack up.  Lamar is using a phantom issue to deceive voters about his real views on education.  It's just like his "I'm against ObamaCare because I voted against it" shtick.  True he voted against funding it, but he voted for cloture which is what allowed it to be passed by a simple majority of Democrats.  What is in the water in DC anyway?  But I digress.  This article is about education and Lamar.



Obama and the Democrats aren't trying to form a National School Board, Lamar.  Are they trying to take over education?  Yes.  See Common Core.  But that doesn't mean that Democrats are trying to form a National School Board as their strategy.  They are too smart for that.  They use more devious ways in which to do so.  Again, see Common Core.

What Lamar isn't touting is his ideas in 1989 for cradle to college education ~starting at 3 months;~ year around school from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.



Where have you heard these ideas before?




Just in case you don't know who this is, it is Obama's current of Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.  And yes, Arne Duncan is a proponent of Common Core.

What is Lamar Alexander's stance on Common Core?  With his misleading ad, he's implying that he's against Common Core.




How about we look at what he does.  It is no secret that Tennessee governor, Bill Haslam is a big supporter of Common Core.  It's an understatement to say that Jeb Bush is a supporter of Common Core.  So who is it that Lamar is palling around with in March 2014?  Why  Jeb Bush and Governor Haslam, of course.


Good Try Lamar!  The good news is that we do have a choice for US Senate.  Joe Carr actually has a record for fighting against Common Core.

Your Kids' New Classmates . . .

Schools here in Memphis get started next week, August 4th.  There will be lots of changes.  After Memphis City Schools surrendered their charter in 2010 to force consolidation with the Shelby County Schools, the subject of education has been a sore spot here in Memphis.  There has been a lot of angst, confusion and name-calling going on.  The parents of the municipalities didn't take kindly to a forced takeover by the failed MCS, so they responded by creating school districts of their own.  Next week will be the kickoff for the new schools.  I wish them well.  The parents in the municipalities showed what can happen when citizens get involved with self-governance.  Kudos to them.

So all will be hunky dory right?  Not so fast.  The municipal schools will still be dealing with Common Core, but that is a subject for another post.  No, what I am referring to are all of the illegal "unaccompanied" minors that will be joining our kids in school.

American kids and teenagers will be sharing their already-crowded classrooms with tens of thousands of ill-educated Central American migrants this fall, because President Obama is distributing perhaps 100,000 Central American migrants across the country.

The arrival of the American students’ new classmates was highlighted July 25 when Obama’s agencies announced he had already distributed 30,340 foreign youths and children by July 7.

Virginia received 2,234 foreign students and Maryland got 2,205, according to the announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services. Texas got 4,280 foreign students, North Carolina got 1,191, and New Jersey got 1,504, said the government statement.  ~My note: Tennessee got 760~
 Those numbers may double by October, however.
More than 50,000 Central American children and youths have crossed the border since October with the aid of smugglers, usually working under a contract with their parents. More that 90 percent say they are teenagers, and more than 95 percent are being released by Obama to their U.S.-based parents or relatives, many of whom are illegal immigrants.

Another 50,000 Central Americans have crossed in so-called “family units,” of at least one parent and child. A few of those are being repatriated, some are being held in government facilities, but many have been bussed or flown to cities where they want to live, despite widespread protests from worried Americans.

More migrants are expected to cross before winter sets in, and next’s year’s inflow is expected to be much larger than this year’s flood, unless the federal government sharply changes its immigration enforcement policies.

Roughly 30,000 Central Americans children and youths arrived from 2012 to September 2013. Most of them are enrolled in U.S. schools, including some who are believed to be over 18.

Not only are these kids not literate in English ~how can they be expected to be?~ they aren't even literate in Spanish.


Another concern that we as parents should have is all the infectious diseases that these kids are bringing with them.  There's tuberculosis, scabies, chicken pox, pneumonia, H1N1 just to name some of them.  I have a daughter whose immune system is compromised because she is on anti-rejection drugs for her transplant.

Chicken pox is the least of my worries as a parent.  Without getting into the whole vaccine debate, ~even if vaccines are as effective as claimed~ it is a fact that vaccines don't give 100% protection.  Here is the link for the vaccines that are required by Shelby County Schools for school registration?   Vaccines for TB, scabies and H1N1 are not on the list.

How about all the MS-13 gang members that are coming across?  Did you know that the vast majority ~84%~ of these "children" are teens?

Even if you believe that the compassionate thing to do is educate these youth, what is it going to do to our schools already stretched budgets?

“We certainly don’t want to communicate that our city is not a welcoming place, especially for young children, but we have to be concerned about our finances and our ability to serve all of our citizens,” said New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell. “If the point comes where we feel as though our resources are getting too strained, we’re going to look to the state and federal government for assistance because that is only fair.”

With our own school, municipal and personal budgets tight, is it really "fair" to our kids to take resources from them to give to illegal entrants?  Schools have security systems to keep out threats to our children.  Now we are being forced to "welcome" them in?

Common Core: Just Standards or really a Curriculum?

One of the big myths that Common Core supporters will tell you is that Common Core is just standards and that they don't dictate to schools and teachers what to teach.  Let's examine this claim and see if it is really true.

This article perpetuates that myth.  The author links to ~note that the link is not correct~ one of the math standards for 2nd grade as an example.  Here is the correct link by the way.

For example, the Standards require second graders to know that “100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens—called a ‘hundred,’” but curriculum dictates the textbook, or teaching methodology, or philosophy used to teach that skill. 

If one looks at all of the 2nd grade math standards that cover Number and Operations in Base 10, one also sees this.

Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

What the heck are concrete models or drawings?  And up to 1000?  What does that even look like?  Glad you asked.  Here is a 3rd grader showing us what is looks like.  Now grant it, she is in 3rd grade so she will be showing us numbers above 1,000.  Are you ready?





And what does it mean to compose or decompose tens or hundreds?  It means breaking down numbers into their components.  And what is it's importance?  According to Leslie at KindergartenWorks.com

The simple answer is because there is value in students being able to see the groupings, relationships and patterns in numbers. We are laying the foundation for students to be able to do 53+12 and see that they can manipulate it into making 50+15 or 60+5 or 50+10+3+2 or any other variety of ways to see the quantity as it makes sense to them.

Do you understand that?  Is she saying that if our kids can break apart numbers, then they can build them back into a number they understand?!?  I'm lost.  How about you?  More importantly, how about your K-2nd grader?  Don't worry though because Ms. Leslie has written three articles to help you understand and teach your kindergartner.  Don't miss out on her visuals.  They will help you understand.  BTW, what is it with 10 frames and Common Core?!?  Are our kids destined to see dots and count dots to do math?

Back to the CC standards.  Here is another one of the actual math standards.  This one is for 1st grade and the Domain is "Operations and Algebraic Thinking".
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Now let's put out critical thinking caps on.  That is after all, what the proponents of Common Core tell us these standards are all about.  Regardless of which company the school district buys its math "curriculum"' from, what has to be taught for the child to pass the test for this standard?  Ms. Lahey mentions Everyday Math as being the culprit here.  How is Everyday Math going to teach this without being confusing?  Ms. Lahey is right.  This fuzzy math ~and the education reformers~ have been around for a long time.  Common Core isn't the first rodeo that parents have had to push back on education reform.  Common Core is probably the first time that these failed math strategies have been written into standards that must be taught.

This is where you have to follow the money in the complicated web that is Common Core.

IF one has a new set of standards that require new skills to be taught and tested on, what happens to the current textbooks and curriculum in a school?  That's right.  They have to be replaced, but replaced with what?  Why curriculum that is aligned with the new standards and tests, right?  Well, where would one go to get new curriculum for Common Core?  Enter Pearson.  Pearson is a London-based company ~yes, as in the London that is across the Pond~ whose goal is to "to transform education globally in order to improve people’s lives through learning."  Pearson is the leading education company that provides ~sells~ curriculum, tests ~for both students and teachers~ and data solutions.   The bonus is that it all fits together in one neat package for the school.  What could be easier than that?  In 2011, Pearson entered into a partnership with the Gates Foundation ~hmm where have we heard that name before?~  to create digital learning systems programs to teach the Common Core standards.  Guess who owns the GED Testing Service?  Well, what do you know.  GED is a joint venture of Pearson and ACE. ~The American Council on Education~  Who else has received Gates Foundation dollars to implement Common Core?  Let's see, there was $4.4 Million to Scholastic ~another familiar name in the school curriculum world~   $4 Million to Khan Academy in 2011, and  $1.5 Million in 2010.  Just for fun go to the Gates Foundation data base for Awarded Grants here and type in Common Core.  Currently it lists 161 grants for Common Core.  Just browse through them and see what names jump out at you.  We'll tackle the Gate Foundation funding in the creation of Common Core in another post.  That is a whole other knot to unravel as is the link between McGraw-Hill and No Child Left Behind.

Still not convinced?  Don't take my word for it, listen to what Bill Gates himself says about aligning the standards with the curriculum and the tests.



Suffice to say, I think we've answered the question of whether Common Core is only standards or do they dictate to teachers what to teach ~curriculum~.  What do you think?

Really? There Are People Who Believe This Stuff?

This is what we are up against folks.  An acquaintance of mine posted this article on Facebook last night with the commentary, “Talk about revisionist history. Because of the large system in Texas (along with California), book publishers will sell texts with this revision in other states rather than publish a separate history text for Texas.”
The Texas Board of Education has drawn scrutiny in recent years for its efforts to revise its curriculum to favor more conservative-friendly versions of history and science. After revising textbooks last year to emphasize Christian influences on the Founding Fathers and introduce Intelligent Design to biology classes, the Board voted nine to zero today to change official nomenclature regarding slavery. In Texas, students will now be taught that slaves were not kidnapped and exploited against their will, but were actually “unpaid interns.”  Read rest here.
 
Since I knew that this particular acquaintance is a Democrat and looks at everything through the prism of race, I commented that I wanted to see the actual documents that sourced this story.  I then went back to the article and started reading the comments.  It was satire.  There were two buttons that at the end of the “story” that said “Show Facts” and “Hide Facts.”  I proceeded to put this in the comments of FB.  There was a woman that commented after me that was outraged and believed it.  I again commented that it was a fake story and asked if she read the comments.

 She had the grace to come back and admit that she was wrong about the story, but that she believed it because “I did not read through the comments; read only the initial commentary. And because I know that historically Texas, because of the size of the market it represents for textbook publishers, has had an undue influence. And because I have read several comments over the past few years re the state's views on multicuturalism, Hispanic, and people of color--and I am aware of its racist legislation--the accusation sounded plausible. If the accusation is incorrect, people will find out. However, it doesn't change my position. People will find out what is true!” 

My response to her was this, “so you jumped to the conclusion that this story is real because of other accusations that you have read about Texas. These other outrageous things that you have read about Texas, have you researched them and found them to be true or just believe them.”
Her response was then, “I believe them!”

My response was, “so you believe them w/o proof because . . .”

Her defense?  “We all know that not "all white people" anywhere are of the same mind. That was not even true in apartheid South Africa. There are always some who are decent human beings with common sense. But the record of Texas speaks for the fact that enough of them are bigots to make it possible for them to elect certain types of legislators and enact certain kinds of laws.”
I then asked her for specifics, “And your proof of all the racists in Texas is what? What are the specific laws that they have enacted that you consider racist?

Her answer was, “NO NO NO. I'm not going to use my time that way. You know as well as I do. Maybe you can give me some examples to disprove my position.”
 
Really?  The burden of proof is always on the accuser.  I'm surprised she didn't come right out and call me a racist.  That is usually what happens.   
We have lots of work to do, folks.  We must challenge individuals that think like this with the truth.  For too long, we have been silent and just ignored them as “crazy,” but the more that I interact with people on a political level, the more I find people that take stuff like this at face value and believe it.  When you challenge individuals like this woman, you are not only talking to her, but to those that are reading who might be on the fence.  We must defeat individuals like this woman, we must educate those that are willing to learn.

School Choice: The Time has Come

“President Obama recognized the extraordinary efforts of some ordinary Americans who were his guests in the House chamber for his State of the Union address. One person who didn’t get his attention, though, was Virginia Walden Ford, a tireless advocate for school choice and education reform.

Walden Ford joined several young D.C. Opportunity Scholarship recipients and their parents and teachers as guests of Speaker John Boehner. Their presence in his box for the speech was a clear indication of the importance Speaker Boehner places on empowering parents with educational options for their children.

Boehner’s recognition of these families and Walden Ford’s leadership stands in clear contrast to President Obama’s omission of them and their cause from his uplifting narrative about making the best education possible to all.”

I hope that the Republicans will gut or eliminate the Dept of Education and take on the teacher’s unions. The brouhaha here in Memphis about the failure of Memphis City Schools is proof that it’s all about money, not about actually educating the children. It’s time to empower parents of all economic levels to choose where their children go to school instead of mandating them into failing schools.

Why not try something New?

With all the brouhaha over the MCS board voting to surrender their charter, why not use this as an opportunity to try something completely new; school vouchers. Why don't we empower the parents that do care and bring competition back into the equation? We already have proof that it works. SCS spend $2K less than MCS per child; yet SCS have better schools. I haven't seen anyone touting the success of MCS; just complaining about SCS being better. SCS already has a problem with kids who live outside the district going to their schools. Why is that? Why not give each parent a voucher for each child. They can then use that voucher to enroll their child in the school of their choice. The schools would then have to compete for students, instead of having a monopoly. The schools would be better. They would start coming up with solutions for educating the children instead of being complacent because they know that they won’t be able to keep their job if their school doesn’t attract students.

Just a thought. . .

I used the term “oppressive liberals” in a comment on a site and I was challenged to name some examples of such “oppression.” Here is my reply.

Let’s see, I’ll start with the oppression of those on welfare here in Memphis. First is our horrendous school system. Not only are many not learning the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, but they are also not safe. Why not give all parents the FREEDOM to choose the school that their children attend? Competition breeds excellence, but our children are stuck in a school system that has failed them.

Next we have failed them in their neighborhoods. Where is crime the highest? Neighborhoods that our government ~us the taxpayers~ subsidizes. Are you living in one of these high crime neighborhoods? I bet not. Why not? Because you have the FREEDOM to choose elsewhere because of YOUR hard work. The oppressive policies of the left give welfare recipients just enough to keep them in poverty with no incentive to work to get out.

Also, we try to replace the father with a check. Which do you think is better? A child with a father with a job who is taking responsibility for his family or a single mom ~most likely a teenager~ with no emotional or physical support? Men in the black community need to stand-up and take responsibility for their families instead of just being sperm donors; and young women in the black community need to be empowered to see that they are more than just sex objects.

I don’t know about you, but that’s what I would call oppressive.
